Learning More About Dentures for Teeth Replacement Needs

When teeth are missing, it can be difficult to talk as well as eat. You may feel uncomfortable talking with others when you have teeth that are missing, or you may stay away from eating at restaurants. One option you have to repair your smile is to speak to your dentist about dentures. With dentures, you have a replacement for your missing teeth. It can be difficult to get used to dentures, but once they are in place, you will feel more confident as you have natural looking teeth that make you feel comfortable when around other and when eating.

Dentists can provide two types of dentures, a full set or a partial. Your dentist will be able to help you find the right option for your oral health needs. The cost will be considered as well as which teeth need to be replaced.

So, how do dentures work? With a full set of dentures, there is a base that is made from acrylic that is flesh colored to blend into the mouth. The base fits over your gums with an upper denture covering the roof of your mouth and the lower denture will fit well with your tongue on the bottom portion of your jaw. A dental laboratory will create the dentures for you based on an impression from your mouth.

Conventional Full Denture

One option you have is a conventional full denture. This type will be fitted to your mouth after remaining teeth are removed from the mouth. The teeth must be removed, and the gum tissue healed before the denture can be put in place. With this option, you may have to wait a considerable amount of time before you can wear the dentures.

Immediate Full Denture

With this option, the denture will be placed in the mouth right after the teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures allow you to never go without teeth, but they must be realigned a few months after they have been put in place. This is due to the fact that the bone that supports the teeth will need to heal and as it heals, it reshapes which will cause the dentures to loosen.

Partial Denture

Another suggestion your dentist might make is a partial. This type of denture will be resting on a framework created from metal. The frame will attach to the natural teeth that remain in the mouth. Crowns may be added to your mouth to provide an anchor for the partial to sit on your teeth for support.

Whichever option you go with, after you begin wearing your dentures, you may feel awkward or uncomfortable in the beginning. When you eat it may be difficult or feel funny while speaking may also be an issue. It is not an uncommon feeling, so simply practice with your dentures so you can get used to them. Over time, you will begin to feel more comfortable and at ease completing regular tasks with your dentures in place.
