Are You Considering Dentures? Here’s What You Need to Know
If you have lost a large number of your teeth, you may be considering whether you should simply get dentures rather than pursuing some other solution such as dental implants. Although dentures are probably the most economical solution, they are not quite as simple as you may think. In fact, the types of dentures that are available have expanded through the years—gone are the days when you would simply order a generic set of dentures and try to make do with them.
At Winn Family Dentistry, we do our best to make sure that our clients are always well-informed. We have put together this article on dentures in order to help you decide whether this is the route you want to take—and, if so, what type of dentures are best for you.
We are proud of our reputation as the premium family dental practice in Bloomer. We want you to know that if you have any questions you are more than welcome to contact us and ask them!
So, What Are Dentures?
Dentures are removable false teeth that you may wear to assist with chewing, speaking, and other daily activities. When you are not using them—such as in the evenings—you may take them out, although you should not spend too much time with them out, as one function of your teeth (and hence, your dentures) is to stimulate the gum and jawbone and prevent them from deteriorating.
Although what it is true that dentures can replace your teeth when you have lost all of your teeth, it is incorrect to believe that you must lose all of your teeth to consider dentures. Many people have partial dentures—dentures that replace only part of their teeth. A partial dentures are generally attached to a metal frame; in turn, this frame attaches to your remaining natural teeth.
Getting used to new dentures can take some time—weeks or even months, depending on the dentures you get in the sensitivity of your gum tissue. Still, over time you will adapt to them and they will begin to feel more natural, although they will probably never feel as natural as your real teeth.
Caring for Your Dentures
One advantage that dentures have old for other types of orthodontic constructions is that they may be taken out for thorough and careful cleaning. When you remove them, you must make sure that you keep them wet. If they dry out it will result in problems for you. In addition, you should not use hot water as this may make them warp.
After you remove your dentures in the evening and before you put them in the morning, you should make sure to brush your tongue and gums as well as the roof of your mouth. This will help keep your mouth clean and healthy.
At Winn Family Dentistry, we are here to answer your questions. Practicing dentistry in Bloomer has talked us to expect just about anything, so please do not hesitate to ask us. We look forward to talking to you!
