Avoiding Common Issues with Dental Hygiene Practices
When it comes to oral hygiene, it can be easy for adults as well as kids to be lacking in the care of their teeth and gums. From busy school schedules to work, many times, proper dental hygiene practices are not followed. When you do not brush your teeth and floss regularly along with avoiding dental appointments, you run the risk of oral health issues such as bad breath, tooth decay, and dry mouth. By learning more about how to care for your teeth and gums, you can hopefully avoid such issues.
Using a Proper Brushing Technique
The first step to quality dental hygiene is to brush your teeth with the right technique. When you quickly brush your teeth for a short period of time, you are not providing a quality clean, especially if you are not holding your brush properly. The American Dental Association recommends that the toothbrush is held at a 45-degree angle to the gums. A back and forth motion must be used on the top and sides of the teeth.
The toothbrush can then be held vertically and the backs of the teeth cleaned. It is important to cover all areas so that plaque does not build up, particularly on hard to reach places.
Time Frame
When it comes to brushing, the process should take two minutes to complete and be done twice a day. Many patients have no idea that two minutes does take some time. Try using a timer to see how long you need to brush your teeth and stick to it. With the proper time frame for brushing, you can clean your teeth thoroughly.
Don’t Forget to Floss
For many patients, brushing is no problem but flossing is not a concern. It is imperative that any stuck on food is removed from in between the teeth and gums. When good remains it can cause issues such as an increase in bacteria.
To floss properly, you will need a piece of floss that is around 18 inches long. This will provide enough fresh floss to clean all of your teeth. Rub the floss in between the teeth in a back and forward C shape motion. The floss should wrap around each tooth for a thorough clean.
Mouthwash is a Must
To further kill any bacteria in the mouth, a mouthwash should be used. With mouthwash, you have an added clean that cannot be provided from floss or brushing. Mouthwash helps to further remove debris which can alleviate any issue with the gums.
Visit the Dentist
Adults, as well as children, should visit the dentist at least twice a year. Cleaning should be completed once every six months. With a cleaning, the dentist will be able to see if you are having any issues and what can be done to treat a condition such as cavities or gingivitis.
